Abstinence Only and Abstinence Plus Programs

As part of the Statewide Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) funded Yuma County Public Health Services District for the past four years to deliver two different programs: Abstinence Only and Abstinence Plus, which support community-based efforts to reduce teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases among youth. These two programs promote responsible decision making and skill building by providing community-based education for youth and parents. We use evidence-based curricula and youth development programs that have been proven to delay sexual activity, improve contraceptive use among sexually active teens, and/or prevent Sexually Transmitted Diseases including HIV/AIDS.

Objective: To promote healthy behaviors and life skills in order to promote a sense of purpose and improve attainment of each participant’s lifelong goals.

Target Population: Youth 12-18 years of age, parents, and/or other interested adults.

• Reduce the number of pregnancies to teenage girls between 12-19 years of age.
• Reduce the number of repeat pregnancies to teenage girls between 12-19 years of age.
• Reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted disease among teenagers between 12-19 years of age.
• Increase awareness among parents of youth ages between 12-19years of age.

Sites: Programs are currently being delivered at six different local High Schools, two Middle Schools, Juvenile Court Youth Groups both in Yuma and San Luis, and various community settings.
